Tree Huggers Comedy
Touring with the Second City, my comedic focus for many years was political satire. As we all discovered in 2016, political satire doesn’t really…work anymore, let’s say…and rather than using all my comedic energy to write about things I hated, I decided to focus instead on the things I loved. So, my directing partner Kyle Niemer and I started combining the comedic mechanisms of satire with the awe-inducing visuals of nature documentaries, creating a series of documentary shorts that explore the wonders of America’s wild places and illuminate the issues they’re facing. We like to describe it as half John Muir and half John Oliver. Here are a few highlights of what we've done in the the past four years:
— Secured first-ever educational signage for the Pando Clone Forest.
—Launched our first series of videos on Outside Magazine Online, garnering hundreds of thousands of native views for the site.
— Served as Crater Lake National Park’s 2019 Artists-in-Residence, shooting a series of documentary shorts and touring a live show through the state of Oregon. Currently trudging through post-production hell.
— Named 2022 USDA Forest Service's "Voices of the Wilderness" Resident Artists in the Kootznoowoo Wilderness, Alaska's infamous "Fortress of Bears." Slated to begin August 2020.
— Selected as Glacier National Park Artists-In-Residence.
— Winners of the inaugural Climate Comedy Cohort (2022), winning a production prize of $20k.
— Featured on NPR, Outside Online, Atlas Obscura, and more.
— Getting to work with an incredibly talented group of artists and educators, including Megan Barbour, Lisa Burton, Isaiah Pearce, Mary O'Brien, and more.
